SENIOR CONSULTANT

Allen Evans

Patent Lawyer & Electrical Engineer
About Allen Evans

Allen Evans is a patent lawyer who has close to fifty years’ experience in patent matters underpinned by formal qualifications in electronics engineering, law, business management, and business information systems. Allen is expert in patenting software and computer-implemented inventions and has successfully navigated Australia’s notoriously difficult ‘manner of manufacture’ (inherent patentability) requirements, for example in relation to a web-based method of processing financial transactions.

His technical training and early professional work encompassed communications systems, computing technologies, radar, signal processing, and related electronic fields, providing a strong foundation for analysing and drafting patent applications in complex and emerging technologies, including computer-implemented inventions.

He began his career in patents as an examiner in the Australian Patent Office and progressed through senior and executive roles, including supervising examiner teams, managing examination sections, conducting hearings, and contributing to policy and legislative development.  His work included direct involvement in the development and implementation of Australia’s current patents legislation.  He later spent around twenty years in industry and professional practice as a registered patent attorney and lawyer, including roles as an employee patent attorney, in-house patent attorney, consultant, and Director of Intellectual Property and Legal for a high-technology start-up.

This combination of deep technical training, legislative experience, and extensive commercial practice provides him with a rare breadth and depth of insight into patent matters, allowing informed judgment on both the legal structure of the patent system and its practical operation in demanding technological and commercial contexts.
